Sister Francita Orcholski, SSND

  • Professed 1956
  • Current Ministry: Sewing Room Coordinator

In the fifth grade I realized that I wanted to be a sister so I prayed hard and helped the Sisters at St. Mary's Czestochowa, Milwaukee, as much as I could. After attending St. Casimir's for ninth grade, I went to the Academy of St. Mary's in Prairie du Chien for the rest of high school. This was called the Aspiranture, where young girls wishing to become Sisters went to study. After the Candidature and Novitiate, I was professed in 1956. This day was a great day for me and I have been happy for the last fifty years!

For 29 years, I taught the primary grades in Milwaukee, Elkhorn, and Port Washington. During most of these years I also served as librarian. In addition, visiting the homebound and sick helped prepare me in my next two ministries. I was asked to be an assistant helper to the community at Elm Grove where our sick sisters lived. From there I went to be a coordinator at the nursing homes where our sisters were transferred to in July 1992. Since 1998, I have been coordinator of the sewing room at Elm Grove. Now as I look back, I can see God's hand in leading me along this path of service to SSND.

Working in the Neonatal Department at St. Joseph's Hospital was a great experience. Another time I treasure was when I answered an invitation in St. Helen's bulletin to assist a family with baby triplets who needed help feeding and holding them. I continue to visit that family. The three boys celebrated their sixth birthday on Valentine's Day.

Currently, I serve on our Associate Leadership Team and have an Associate I am accompanying. Soon one of my former classmates will become an Associate. An activity that brings me much joy is clowning. I dress up as Orange Blossom and "clown around."  I don't do it often enough but, when I do, I have great fun! In addition to sewing, my interests are reading, walking and doing crafts. On occasion, I enjoy participating in craft shows with my nieces.

I thank my community for giving me opportunities to do many things in my life. I am grateful to God for the gifts given to me.
