WOMEN PUTTING THEIR STAMP ON METRO MILWAUKEE 2006

HUMANITARIANISM

In 1998, Sister Josephe Marie Flynn accepted the position of Director of Adult Education and Family Ministry at St. Mary's Parish in Hales Corners. It was in this position that Sister Josephe met Regina Bakala and led the fight to help Regina avoid deportation to the Congo where she faced torture and death for her political activities.

Sister's efforts include: retaining legal counsel for Regina; enlisting the support of St. Mary's parishioners; securing Regina's release from the Kenosha Detention Center; holding prayer vigils; inspiring the creation of a website to provide updates of Regina's case; writing updates for the website; and enlisting the support of elected officials and Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

Last year, Sister Josephe retired from her full-time position at St. Mary Parish and is now writing a book about Regina's case. She is also helping Regina prepare for the next step when she will appear before immigration authorities.

Sister Joseph has been a School Sister of Notre Dame since she was a teenager. In addition to her two biological sisters, she counts the School Sisters as her chosen family. She has a Master's degree in theology and a Bachelor's degree in art and English. In her free time, Sister Josephe enjoys writing, genealogy, art, graphic design, the fine arts, movies and plays.
