Congratulations…
Sister Margaret Rose Donnelly
was honored by St. Mary parishioners with a full page congratulatory ad in the Decatur Daily Democrat on April 30, 2008. The entire community of Decatur, Indiana is invited to a Mass and reception in celebration of Sister Margaret Rose’s 50th Jubilee on Sunday, July 13. The Mass begins at 1 p.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 414 Madison St. in Decatur followed by a reception at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 2 to 3 p.m. Upon receiving this honor, Sister Margaret Rose recognized her Religious Congregation, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, who celebrate l75 years (1833-2008) serving our Lord by serving others. She has served at St. Mary’s for the past 12 years and currently in ministering there as pastoral associate. Sister Margaret Rose was previously awarded “Woman of the Year” by the Decatur Daily Democrat 2008 Readers’ Choice Poll.

Human Trafficking...
Tim Dewane, director of the School Sisters of Notre Dame's Global Justice and Peace Office in the Milwaukee Province was interviewed by the Associated Press about the problem of human trafficking. Articles about how human trafficking is being addressed in the Wisconsin State Legislature appeared in newspapers across the state. Message of Peace...
The February 16 issue of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (page 10a) contained an important message of peace, courtesy of Lillia Langreck, SSND. You can see a copy of her letter on-line by clicking HERE.

SUNSEED News...
Students at Consolidated Parochial Elementary School in Mount Calvary were featured with Mary Beck, SSND and Suzanne Moynihan, SSND in a story about the “Garden Plot to Kitchen Pot” program that appeared in The Reporter on February 8. The program is sponsored by SUNSEED Eco Education Center, directed by Mary Ann Srnka, SSND in Mount Calvary and funded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Third grade students actively participate in growing food while caring for our Earth. In addition to experiencing diversity and responsibility, the children discover fresh food and learn to make healthier food choices. To see the article online, please click HERE.

Teacher of the year...
Colleen Bauer, SSND received a Light of Learning Teacher of the Year Award at the award luncheon held January 28 in South Bend, IN. Sister has taught second graders at St. John the Evangelist School in Goshen, IN for the past 21 years. The school has participated in this program for the last 10 years and this is the third time Sister Colleen has received this award.

Activism extended beyond college to community...

Founders and first director honored...
The Fifth Annual Achievement Awards Ceremony for Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services was held at Alverno College on January 25. This was part of Milwaukee Achiever’s year-long celebration of their 25 years of service to the Milwaukee Community. At the celebration, the three founders Joel Read, SSSF, Ellen Lorenz, SSND, Camille Kliebhan, OSF and the first executive director, Mary Catherine Dundon, SSND, were especially honored. Sister Mary Catherine gave the closing reflection.
Keynote address...
Shawnee Marie Daniels-Sykes, SSND, assistant professor of theology and bioethics at Mount Mary College was the keynote presenter at the Martin Luther King Memorial Prayer Service on January 21 at St. Martin de Porres Parish, Milwaukee. The title of her talk was “I’m Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired: Health Care — Is It a Right or a Privilege?” Sister Shawnee was recently inducted into Sigma Beta Tau, an international nursing honor society.
