SSND In the News – 2011

July 6, 2011 – Sister Josephe Marie Flynn's book is published

Author, Sister Josephe Marie Flynn and picture of her book – Rescuing ReginaSister Josephe Marie Flynn, cofounder and chair of the Milwaukee Archdiocesan Justice for Immigrants Committee and leader of the Save Regina Campaign, celebrated her new book, Rescuing Regina, with a launch party at Mount Mary College in Milwaukee on July 6, 2011.

On March 22, 2005, Regina Bakala, a Congolese torture survivor, was seized from her Milwaukee home by immigration officials. A decade after fleeing the Congo for the U.S., having endured rape, imprisonment and torture for advocating democracy in her homeland, Regina found herself locked in a Milwaukee prison facing deportation to almost certain death.

Rescuing Regina: The Battle to Save a Friend from Deportation and Death (Lawrence Hill Books, an imprint of Chicago Review Press, July 2011) by Josephe Marie Flynn, SSND, is the harrowing true story of a feisty nun, a ferocious lawyer, and a group of grassroots volunteers who set aside political differences in a race to save Regina from deportation to her Congolese torturers. Along the way, Sister Josephe holds America's hidden asylum system up for long overdue scrutiny, exposing its arbitrariness and lack of safeguards.
