St. Louis — The School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND), a Catholic congregation of women religious, are reconfiguring and forming a new province in North America. In June, the sisters of the current provinces in Dallas, Texas; Mankato, Minn.; Milwaukee, Wis.; and St. Louis, Mo., will become a new province called School Sisters of Notre Dame of the Central Pacific Province.

At an election assembly held March 14-18 in St. Louis, Sister Mary Anne Owens, SSND, of Dallas, was elected provincial leader of the new province. She is currently the executive director for Catholic Charities in Dallas. The eight provincial councilors who were elected are:

The inauguration day of the new province and the installation of the new leadership team will be held on Pentecost Sunday, June 12, 2011, in The Holy Family Chapel at Notre Dame of Elm Grove in Elm Grove, Wis.

More than 1,200 sisters will be united in this new province of SSND. "Central Pacific Province" is a reference to the central United States geographic location of the current campuses, the SSND ministries in the western and Pacific coast areas, and the sisters in Japan and Guam.

This new SSND province is just one of many throughout the world; School Sisters of Notre Dame presently serve in 35 countries. The other provinces in North America are the Atlantic-Midwest Province and the Canadian Province.

School Sisters of Notre Dame have been in the United States since 1847, in response to a request for teachers to educate the children of German immigrants. They quickly became respected and requested as teachers for parochial and public schools, from preschools to universities. The sisters have been serving in Milwaukee since 1850, New Orleans (Dallas Province) since 1856, St. Louis since 1858 and Mankato since 1865.

The sisters share their commitment – to transform the world through education – in various settings, including classrooms for all levels of education, parishes, healthcare facilities, prisons and social service organizations.
