Jubilarian – 2010
Marie Regine Redig
Professed in 1950

Sister Marie Regine Redig celebrates 60 years as a School Sister of Notre Dame. In classrooms and on retreats, she has ministered to many. When a former elementary student contacted her decades later, she could not have anticipated the joyful reason.
A meaningful time in my ministry…
About a year ago, a student I taught in sixth grade in 1963 shared with me that when she was in my class, it was the first time in her life that she felt accepted and loved for who she was. Her opinions and ideas were listened to and respected. She felt like she was somebody. While she knew the feeling as a child, she did not have words to express it. I appreciated hearing that the efforts of my early ministry bore fruit.
In my retreat ministry in the early 1980s, I once directed a Sister for whom that particular retreat was super significant. She has thanked me for my guidance over and over. She is 97 now, and we continue to write to each other about four times a year. When in her city, I visit her.
What drew me to the SSND Community…
My SSND blood sister, Sister Carola, was nearly eleven years older than I. My parents were very proud of her. When I first considered religious life, I had to ask myself if I was looking for that same affirmation for myself. After many pop visits during noon hour at the church connected to our high school, I decided that the reason for entering SSND was my own call from God.
One thing you might like to know about the School Sisters of Notre Dame…
I’d like people to see SSNDs as an international group with a world vision wrapped up in service, community and prayer. I’d like us to be known as generous women who make it possible, especially for women, children and the poor, to break the bonds of oppression.
In my current ministry…
Right now, I am in transition. I have been semi-retired while engaged in spiritual guidance of individuals and a good amount of volunteer work, especially at Blessed Savior Parish. My upcoming move will be from Milwaukee to Chicago, where I will be part of the newly forming community for postulants. I will be in full retirement, but also involved in some volunteer service.
Looking back and looking ahead…
I am convinced that God loves me and continues to call me into deeper relationship through my life as an SSND. We are a good fit.
