Jubilarian – 2010
Mary Regina Meyer, SSND
Professed in 1940
Sister Mary Regina Meyer celebrates 70 years as a School Sister of Notre Dame. Following her school days under the tutelage of SSNDs, Sr. Mary Regina taught students of her own for half a century. This year, she is one of two SSND’s celebrating their 70th jubilee.
A meaningful time in my ministry…
I have been an SSND for a total of 70 years now. My teaching ministry spanned 50 years and 11 schools, all in Wisconsin. I have been blessed by opportunities to teach, to learn and to celebrate this year’s jubilee along with Sister Mary Ann Therese Schiferl, who also made her first profession on July 27, 1940. Another “classmate” of ours, Sister Mary Arnold Franz, was born to eternal life earlier this year.
What drew me to the SSND Community…
I was fortunate to have SSNDs as teachers during my first eight grades of school. I admired the Sisters and wanted to be like them. I also wanted to be a teacher.
One thing you might like to know about the School Sisters of Notre Dame…
We are dedicated to spreading the Word of God through education. That means teaching school curricula, but much, much more. Of course, we must teach by example and not only words.
In my current ministry…
I am retired now and live in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Retirement Community. The SSNDs first arrived here in Mount Calvary, Wis., in the mid-1800s. An SSND Sister and a postulant got things started in two donated log cabins—one for living quarters and one for a small school. Today, we have the SUNSEED Eco-Educational Center, where SSNDs invite visitors to experience spectacular natural beauty, organic gardening, and spiritual nourishment.
Looking back and looking ahead…
I am always happy to pray for people’s needs and to be part of the SSND presence wherever life as an SSND has taken me.
