There are six provinces of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in North America. Milwaukee was the first province and is where the original North American Vicar, Mother Caroline Friess, established the first American motherhouse in 1850.
Each province is run by its own provincial council with the number of councilors varying according to need. The Milwaukee province is one of the largest of the SSND provinces with a provincial leader and four councilors.
The council offices are in Notre Dame Hall at the Notre Dame of Elm Grove campus in Elm Grove, Wisconsin.
