In
the latter part of the 19th century the School Sisters of Notre Dame established
St. Mary's Institute in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. In 1913, this school
was chartered as Saint Mary's College, a four-year, liberal arts, school
for Catholic women – the first in the state.
In 1929, the school opened its doors as Mount Mary College on the far
west side of Milwaukee which was closer to the main population center
of the state.
SSNDs have taught at Mount Mary from its beginnings in Prairie du Chien
to the present day, and many graduates have gone on to become sisters.
Others stay connected to the SSNDs through alumni associations and by
simply maintaining contact with their former teachers.
